Leather is essentially animal hide and skins after being tanned. It is a durable and flexible material that can be used to make a variety of articles. The history of leather crafting goes back to 2200 BCE. There is a wide variety of types of leathers and it will take a lot of time to dig into it. So today we only focus on the leathers that we use here in Libertaz Leathers atelier.
We take pride in our premium selection of leathers. All of our leathers come from prominent tanneries from Italy, France, UK and Japan, etc. We have been working with these leathers for years, along the way we come to get a grip on the characteristics of the leathers, choosing the right leathers for different projects, and choosing the right techniques for different types of leathers.
- Conceria Walpier's Buttero: Conceria Walpier is a tannery from Tuscany, Italy with more than 40 years of history. They are well known for their high-quality vegetable tanned leathers. Buttero is their top grade, widely regarded as one of the best Italian vegetable tanned leathers. It is full grain, has a medium to firm temper, a huge range of vibrant colors, and superbly smooth finishes. These fascinating features make Buttero ideal for many types of leather project, such as wallets, belts, bags, and many other leather goods.

- Shell Cordovan: Shell cordovan is an equine leather made from the shells located in the rump of the horse. The name comes from a city called Cordoba in Spain, where the leather was first made in the 17th century. Shell cordovan is called diamond of the leathers, famous for its durability, luster, and rarity. We have shell cordovans from different tanneries. Each has a unique combination of features and performance.
- Shinki Hikaku shell cordovan: Shinki Hikaku is a tannery from Japan specializing in shell cordovan and horse hide. The process of making shell cordovan takes approximately 10 months at Shinki Hikaku. It is such delicate craftsmanship that makes world-class shell cordovan.
- Horween shell cordovan: Horween is a world-famous tannery based in Chicago, US. The company now has a history of over 100 years and is known as the only tannery in North America that supplies the highest quality shell cordovan.
- Minerva Box: Minerva Box is the top-grade vegetable tanned leather produced by the famous Badalassi Carlo Tannery in Italy. It is full grain and has a natural pebbled texture. Minerva has a nice balance between supple and firm, as a result, it is suitable for producing leather bags or purses, totes, luggage, wallets and journal covers etc.
- Bridle leather: Our English bridle leather comes from J & E Sedgwick & Co. Ltd. JE Sedgwick was found in 1900 and now is the world No. 1 saddle leather tannery. Bridle leather has a firm temple which makes it suitable for the most premium belts, bags, wallets and other small leather goods.
- Togo: Togo leather is famous because it is probably the most popular Hermès leather. Togo has a nice supple temper, velvet-like finishes, and a natural pebbled texture. It is prized for the fine grain and the good scratch resistance.
- Epsom: Epsom is an embossed leather, which means the pattern pressed into the leather is not actual grain. However, the pressed grain provides some major benefits, such as remarkable durability, scratch resistance, easy maintenance. Furthermore, Epsom is quite structured and holds its shape perfectly over time.
- Chèvre Chagrin "Sully": The Chèvre Chagrin leather is from the Alran tannery, which is the best "Goat leather processer in France”. Alran has a history of over 100 years, throughout the time Alran has been supplying the finest goat leather for luxury brands. Chèvre Chagrin “Sully” features a smooth, light pebbled texture, supple feel and even color, and is extremely durable.
